Salford Crescent is one of two train stations in Salford, Greater Manchester, England. The other station is Salford Central. The station is 1.75 miles west of Manchester Victoria and 2.25 miles west of Manchester Piccadilly. It consists of a single island platform with a ticket office and waiting room.
Services Eastbound: frequent services operate to Manchester Piccadilly (some continuing to Manchester Airport or Buxton, the latter peak hours only) and to Manchester Victoria & Rochdale.
Services Westbound: Northern Rail services operate to Bolton, Clitheroe, Wigan, Kirkby and Southport, whilst First TransPennine Express services operate to Barrow-in-Furness and to Oxenholme and Windermere (limited service - through trains to Glasgow & Edinburgh no longer stop here). Both First TransPennine and Northern operate to Blackpool North.
The station is also signposted as "For University of Salford", as the station is located in between the University's Peel Park Campus and the Frederick Road Campus.
Salford Crescent is located on two main rail lines in Greater Manchester. First, it forms the point of a split in the Manchester-Preston Line, with local services running on to Manchester Victoria and long-distance services going to Manchester Piccadilly. Secondly, it is part of the line between Manchester and Wigan Wallgate. Due to its location it is frequently used as an interchange between the two lines.
Manchester North signalling centre is situated at the station - this controls the routes through Manchester Victoria station and on towards Rochdale and Ashton but not the tracks that actually pass in front of it (which are controlled from Manchester Piccadilly SCC). |
