Trains to Oldham Werneth - Station Details and further Information on Oldham Werneth Train Services
Oldham Werneth train station was a small train station on the Oldham Loop Line, 10 km (6¼ miles) north east of Manchester Victoria. The station was situated on Featherstall Road South, in the Werneth area of Oldham, in Greater Manchester, England.
The stretch of line near Werneth, with its gradient of 1 in 27, contributes to the Oldham Loop being the steepest regular passenger line in the country.
It predominantly served local Chadderton, Westwood and Werneth residents. The station, and all trains serving it, were operated by Northern Rail.
The station was built originally to serve the Platt Bros. of Oldham, a huge cotton spinning engineering company, who had their headquarters in Werneth. However, this company no longer exists.
A former branch line called the Werneth Incline, ran from Werneth Station down to Middleton Junction. The incline which had a gradient of 1 in 27, was one of the steepest stretches of main line in the country. The Werneth Incline closed in 1963.
The station closed for the conversion of the line to Metrolink on 3 October 2009 and will re-open as Oldham Werneth Metrolink station in 2012.
