The station is at one of end of the 2-mile long Morley Tunnel, which goes underneath the town. The station was opened by the LNWR in 1848 and was known as "Morley Low" station due to its low lying location. The other station (known as Morley Top) situated nearer to the town centre (on the GNR Bradford to Ardsley line) was closed by BR in January 1961.
The new Morley Town Council erected a plaque bearing the words 'Morley Low' at the train station so as to celebrate its historic name. However, this was removed due to complaints by many people who did not disembark at the station, believing it to not be the actual Morley railway station.
