Trains to Knighton - Station Details and further Information on Knighton Train Services
Knighton train station serves the market town of Knighton in Powys, Wales, although the station itself is located in Shropshire, England (the boundary is no more than 100yds from the station). It lies 32 miles south west of Shrewsbury (by railway line). There are four trains a day in each direction (Shrewsbury northbound and Swansea southbound) from Monday to Saturday, and two services on Sundays.
The train station is located below street level at Station Road beside the River Teme close to the centre of the town. All trains serving the station are operated by Arriva Trains Wales, who also manage the station.
There are two platforms at the station today, although from 1964 until 1990 only a single line and platform (the current southbound one) was used. The 30 mile long block section between Craven Arms and Llandrindod Wells was considered to be a capacity bottleneck (even on such a lightly used line) however and following the modernisation of the route signalling in 1986, an additional passing loop was installed here to provide extra capacity and the disused second platform refurbished & returned to use. Currently though the loop and northbound platform are out of service (due to a shortage of spare parts for the point machines) and all trains are using the southbound platform. |
