Trains to Hexham - Station Details and further Information on Hexham Train Services
Hexham train station serves the town of Hexham in Northumberland, England. It is located on the Tyne Valley Line which runs from Newcastle upon Tyne to Carlisle, and is managed by Northern Rail who provide most passenger train services along with First Scotrail.
The station has an hourly service on weekdays to Carlisle and two trains per hour to Newcastle - one fast service (from Carlisle) calling at Prudhoe and the MetroCentre only and one serving most local stations that starts/terminates here. Many of the stopping trains continue on via the Durham Coast Line to Sunderland and Middlesbrough. There are also a limited number of through trains beyond Carlisle to Glasgow and Stranraer. Evenings and Sundays see an hourly service in each direction.
The station features two waiting rooms, one on each platform. Platform two's waiting room has a fireplace made of black marble, which includes many fossilised orthoceras cephalopods, dated to approximately 400 million years old. Platform two also has a ticket machine, and a brand new shop, accessed from the platform, that sells rail paraphernalia. Newly installed ticker-screens show the estimated arrival times of the next few trains.
The station has toilets located on platform two, and a bar/restaurant called The Green Room. Access to The Green Room is from outside the station. The station forms part of Hexham Transport Interchange. There is also an internet phone box, a bus stop, and a small taxi rank outside which is serviced by several local taxi companies, the largest of these being Advanced Taxis. A pay-and-display car park is available. There is a staffed ticket office on platform two.
Dating from around 1835, Hexham station is one of the oldest purpose-built train stations in the world. The station has diminished in size and importance since the closure of the Allendale branch and the Border Counties Railway in the 1950s, both of which met the Tyne Valley line west of Hexham station. |
