Northern Rail operate the station and provide all passenger train services except a daily National Express East Coast service to London Kings Cross.
There is a staffed ticket office open seven days a week. There is also a newsagent, cafe, key cutters, ATMs, photo booths and a waiting room. All of the facilities are located on the main concourse on Platform 1. There are 3 platforms, although only 2 are used regularly; platforms 1 and 3 because the bay platform 2 faces in the direction of Knaresborough and York and none of the trains to either destination originate from Harrogate.
The Monday to Saturday daytime service is generally a half-hourly from Harrogate to Leeds City (southbound)calling at all stations and to Knaresborough (eastbound) on the Harrogate Line with an hourly service onwards to York also calling at all stations en route.
Services double in frequency at peak time to Leeds City, resulting in 4tph with 1tph running fast to Horsforth. There are 4tph in the opposite direction between 16:29 and 18:00 from Leeds City with one running fast from Horsforth to Hornbeam park. Evenings and Sundays there is generally an hourly service from Leeds through Harrogate towards Knaresborough and York.
Monday to Saturdays, one NXEC service starts in Harrogate and goes towards Horsforth and Leeds then onto London King's Cross. This service has a history of poor reliability with trains often being cancelled altogether.
There are proposals to create another station between Harrogate and Starbeck at Bilton. Most trains are operated by Class 156, rolling stock although Class 142 units are also fairly common and occasionally Class 158 units are used. The one train per day London service is operated using a High speed train. |
