Canonbury train station serves the district of Canonbury within the London Borough of Islington in north London. It is on the North London Line. The station and all trains serving it are operated by London Overground. It is in Travelcard Zone 2. This station is close to the boundary with the London Borough of Hackney.
The station opened in 1858 east of its present location as "Newington Road & Balls Pond" and was renamed "Canonbury" shortly before the move to its present site in 1870. In 2007 the ticket office was extensively refurbished.
The typical service at the station is 4 trains per hour westbound to Richmond via Highbury, Camden Town and Willesden, and 4 trains per hour eastbound to Stratford via Hackney.
As part of the northern extension of the East London Line due to be completed in 2011, Canonbury Station will be remodelled as a four platform interchange between the East London Line and London Overground services on the North London Line. Step-free access will be provided to all platforms and peak service frequencies will increase to 12 trains per hour in each direction. |
