• One way or Return - Select "One Way" for a single ticket
• Passengers - Select the number of Adults and Children Traveling. 5-15 Year Olds tend to pay around half the price of a full paying adult. On most services Children under 5 travel Free.
• Traveling From & To - Your departure train station and the station you wish to arrive at.
• Departing and Returning - Select your dates of Travel. For a single ticket simply leave the returning section as it is. (When you click the one-way button at the top you will notice it fades the re turing section out).
• Ticket Type - If your not sure of when you will return click the open/flexible button. For all other travel leave the icon set to cheapest.
• Journey Route - Meeting a friend on route select the "stops at" icon and enter the station where your friend is boarding. If you wish to take a particular route use the via icon or avoid a place you do not wish to pass through.
• Travel class - If you require a first class ticket change the icon from standard to first.
• Railcard - If you have a railcard to obtain cheaper train tickets stipulate it here by selecting it from the drop down menu.

Tips and Tricks to get the cheapest Train Tickets

• Two Singles can often be cheaper than a return. Due to the big difference in price for journeys at peak time a journey where only your outward or return journey is during peak time and the other is off-peak your ticket will almost certainly be cheaper if you purchase two single train tickets.


• Buy a Railcard - Railcard's can save you money if you're under 26 (Young Person's Railcard), over 60 (Senior Railcard), a family (Family Railcard), or disabled (Disabled Person's Railcard).  They cost around £25 and give up to 34% off normal fares (so can pay for themselves in just one or two long-distance journeys at the Saver Return fare). If you already have a Railcard you can still get your ticket here at your special rates. Simply select the type of railcard you have from the drop down menu and your discount will be applied to the cost of your tickets in the search results.


• Book as early as you can - Due to National Rail's ticketing structure the earlier you book the cheaper your train ticket will be. Advance purchase tickets are released in 3 price categories. Once the cheapest tickets sell out the price of the ticket moves to the next price band. The first band of advance rate tickets are usually released 12 weeks before the date of travel and are available until they sell out (even up to 6pm on the day prior to travel if any remain)

The National Rail Network

Since 1995, Britain's rail network has been run by 20+ private companies. However, the government makes sure they work together as National Rail, with coordinated fares, ticketing & information. You can find train times & fares for all operators all on one website, and you can buy a ticket between any two stations, with tickets normally valid on any operator's trains.

24 privately owned Train Operating Companies (TOCs) operate trains on the UK rail network. The Association of Train Operating Companies (ATOC) provides a common voice for the TOCs and some degree of central coordination: the provision, for example, of a national timetable, journey planner, and enquiry service.

Passenger train services in the UK are, in the main, structured on the basis of regional franchises awarded by the Department for Transport (DFT) to Train Operating Companies. Some slight variations include Merseyrail where the franchise is awarded by Merseyside Passenger Transport Executive and Scotrail where the DfT awards on the advice of the Scottish Government. There were initially 25 such franchises, but the number of different operating companies is smaller as some firms, including First Group, National Express Group and Stagecoach Group, have more than one franchise. In addition some franchises have since been combined. There are a number of local or specialised rail services operated on an 'open access' basis outside the franchise arrangements. Examples include the Heathrow Express and Hull Trains.

Most UK railway stations date from the Victorian era and are located on the edge of town centres. Major stations are generally in large cities, with a particular concentration in London, but some important railway junction stations lie in smaller cities, for example Crewe station and Carlisle station. Other places expanded into towns and cities because of the railway network, Swindon for example was little more than a village prior to the Great Western Railway siting their locomotive works there.
