Smyril Line Ferries was established in 1982 with the aim of operating a passenger/vehicle ferry service on the North Atlantic linking Iceland, the Faroe Islands, Scotland/Shetland, Norway and Denmark. The North Atlantic Link has been succesfully operated with their MF. Norröna 12,000 GRT and a capacity for 1,050 passengers and 300 cars, and since April 2003 a new ferry and a capacity for 1,482 passengers and 800 cars and a service speed of 21 knots.

Smyril Line Ferries put great emphasis and effort into ensuring that all passengers feel comfortable and enjoy their crossing. Therefore passengers have many possibilities to pass the time on board. The ferry Norröna has onboard a swimming pool and fitness centre with sunbeds and sauna, a large and good playroom for the children and a large selection of goods in the shops.

In the cafeteria onboard you can choose from a wide selection of light meals or enjoy an evening full of North Atlantic specialities at the delicious buffet in the restaurant. For gourmet delicacies you can visit the 'a la carte' restaurant and enjoy an evening of fine food and delicious wines. In the Viking Club try one of the coctails from the vast coctail menu and dance to live music all night long. For a more laid-back experience you can visit the Naust Lounge bar and relax in comfortable sofas.

Smyril Line Ferries was established in 1982 by Mr Oli Hammer together with Jógvan í Dávastou and Andrias Joensen with the aim of operating a passenger/vehicle ferry service on the North Atlantic linking Iceland, the Faroe Islands, Scotland/Shetland, Norway and Denmark. The North Atlantic Link has been succesfully operated with their large, modern, multi-purpose ferry MF. Norröna. The Norröna was build at Rendsburg ship yard in 1973 and has a gross tonnage of 12,000t, a capacity for 1,050 passengers and 300 cars a cruising speed of 20 mph.

The first few years proved to be financially challenging for the ferry operator but thereafter its financial situation improved.

In 1985-86 the ferry operator received a financial boost when a profitable leasing contract was signed with NATO. NATO leased the Norröna for the purpose of providing transportation for military training camps in the Baltic Sea, North Sea and the Irish Sea.

In 1995 Smyril Line starts planning to replace the Norrönawith a newer ferry. In April 2003 the new ferry, also named Norröna, with a capacity for 1,482 passengers and 800 cars and a service speed of 21 knots was launched. It is both a passenger and chargo ship and was built in was built in Lübeck, Germany.
