Amsterdam Port Ferry Overview (Ijmuiden)

Located to the northwest of Amsterdam on the North Sea, the port of Amsterdam is located in Ijmuiden and offers daily crossings to Newcastle in England. The port of Amsterdam at Ijmuiden provides an alternative way in which to reach Holland's Amsterdam from the northeast of England. Ferry crossings run from Ijmuiden to Newcastle, and are provided by DFDS Seaways. Two ships run this route, with an overnight sailing in each direction and a journey time of 15 hours.

Ijmuiden is a fairly new city in its present form, that only came into existence in the 1870s, when the North Sea Canal was dug, connecting the Amsterdam harbors to the open sea, therefore creating the Port of Amsterdam. The North Sea locks located at Amsterdam port are among the largest in the world and one set is able to close off a shipping lane of 50 meters wide and 12 meters deep.

Amsterdam is the financial and cultural capital of the Netherlands. Amsterdam's main attractions, including its historic canals, the Rijksmuseum, the Van Gogh Museum, Anne Frank House, its red-light district and its many cannabis coffee shops, draw 4.2 million tourists annually.
